How does an erection occur ?

An erection is achieved after a complex process of events has occurred in the male anatomy. The first part of an erection occurs by a trigger signal sent by your cranial nerves to the brain's sensorimotor area, the signal can come from a number of sources such as a smell from the nose, a sound from the ears but the most common being a visual signal from the eyes also nerve receptors in the skin communicate touch and feel signals to the brain.

The brain interprets the signal it receives, the signal is compared to a memorised association of similar, related or past occurrence, if it is considered to be a sexual stimulus event your central nervous system will send nerve impulses down your spinal cord tracts to the muscles in your penis.

It is the muscles of the corpora cavernosa that receive the nerve impulse from the brain which tells the muscle to relax, as the muscle relaxes blood is allowed to travel in from the arteries into the corpora cavernosa which is a spongy chamber that contain spaces that expand to hold 90% of the blood that is involved in the event of an erection. As the chambers expand it reduce the blood's ability to leave throught the drainage system of veins located on the outer walls of the corpus cavernosum chamber, this is because when it is expanded it is pressing against the surrounding dense tissue (tunica albuginea) which prevents the blood from escaping.

An erection begins to looses its hardness when the muscle of the corpora cavernosa begins to tense up, less blood is allowed to flow into the penis which allows the corpus cavernosum chamber to drain blood faster through its outer walls.
